About Us

Hi! Siggi here, Sept 3, 2013, updating this site after a whole school year away. Why the hiatus?

Well, we up and moved to Boston, MetroWest to be more precise but still fairly vague. My parents need more care than I can give them from four hours away, and I wanted a more dynamic and academically energized environment for both myself and my family. Vermont was my home for 20 years, and I adore it, but it was time to move on, and things are going great.

I’ll update our bios below when I have good, *current* photos of us to hand. Suffice it to say that today would have been Buddy’s/E5’s first day of kindergarten, but that he’s already working in several first grade workbooks, and is a Minecraft fiend, just like his sisters. TTFN!

Siggi: Former public school science teacher, current homeschooling mom, lifelong learner. Runs STEM enrichment, mostly for homeschoolers, in Chittenden County, Vermont, where we live. Lifelong artist, scientist, writer, chronic illness manager, and bad housekeeper.

Likes: medieval and textile history, science fiction, astronomy, daydreaming, thoughtful discourse, being friends with her kids.

Favorite color: Brown, but I’m trying to incorporate some bright colours into my wardrobe, now that I’m 40!

Daddyman: Former military and martial arts instructor, current RN, student, science fiction/urban fantasy writer, an

d consultant to the e-publishing industry.  Lifelong scientist, writer, and procrastinator.

Likes: medieval co

Favorite color: Blue.
mbat, computer games, staying up until all hours to get some quiet time so he can write in peace.

Beara: Turned six (April 2012) along with fraternal twin sister, Big D.  Gregarious and passionate, Beara has yet to meet someone she doesn’t want to befriend or help.  She writes stories (just like her Dad), and is motivated to do the more tedious parts of her core academic subjects by her strong desire to go to Mars.

Loves to dance, writes and directs plays, and memorizes the melodies to pretty much anything she hears.  She builds and populates towns full of Playmobile and Lego people, and co-creates incredible stories about their lives and adventures.

Favourite color: yellow!  (That dress and blouse are her favourite outfit, even if the strap never does stay up for long!)

Big D: Six and loving it.  Lifelong problem solver and observer, Big D has a knack for understanding complex systems.   She gets easily frustrated, and struggles with getting big ideas on and off the page.
Likes:  Lego, and building with anything she can get her hands on.  Adores her speech therapist, with whom she is making enormous progress.  Enjoys the sense of accomplishment she gets from completing workbooks, and staying ahead of her siblings.  Wants to be a roboticist, since she likes building things, electronics, and space, but is afraid of heights, so doesn’t want to go up herself.
Favourite color: Purple.
Buddy, aka Moose: Will turn four in August 2012, but I wonder if he considers himself the girls’ triplet born late.  Loves to do anything they do, and is quite upset that he can’t be an official Daisy Scout, or go to Girl Scout camp with them this summer.  Works hard on his reading, writing, and math, so he “can catch up with them!”  Earnest and cool, Buddy makes friends easily, and gets upset when older people don’t get that he is capable of much more than one would think from his size and age.
Likes: Star Wars, Lego, archery (which he started learning before his third birthday), swords, knights, playing ‘guys’, doing ‘maf’ with Mama, and being a digital native.  Most often repeated sentence: “I have just one more question.”
Favourite color:  Today he says it is black, but it changes daily.
(All pictures taken the weekend of the girls’ sixth birthday, in April 2012.)

I miss his curls too, but, more often than not, he looked a bit wild man, and the tangles were terrible. He’s just as cute though, honest. I have no worries that he’d have you wrapped around his finger again inside five minutes! 😉

Just stumbled upon your blog today and wanted to say I really enjoy reading about your adventures. I am planning on homeschooling my son, and am currently in the process of reading as much as I can about what other people are doing.

      Hi, Jenny, and welcome!

Do you have any sense of what kind of homeschooling might suit your family best? If you can give me some ideas, or at least your son’s temperament and age, I might be able to point you at some other great blogs of interest. Enjoy!
